Homemade Croutons
Don’t toss that stale loaf—turn it into something crave-worthy. Homemade croutons are one of the easiest ways to give new life to day-old bread, and they beat anything you’ll find in a bag. With just a drizzle of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and your favorite herbs or spices, you can transform dry sourdough into golden, crunchy bites perfect for topping salads, soups, or snacking straight off the tray. Once you taste how flavorful and customizable they are, you’ll never go back to store-bought.
What you'll need:
Stale bread loaf (sourdough, Italian, etc.)
~1-2 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
How to make it:
Preheat your oven to 375°F.
Cut your old bread loaf into cubes of your desired size. Aim for cubes around 1-inch in size for a good crouton texture.
Place the bread cubes on a baking sheet. Drizzle (not drench) olive oil evenly over them. Sprinkle salt and any additional seasonings over the cubes. Toss gently to coat.
Spread the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the croutons are golden brown and crispy. Stir or toss halfway through baking for even browning.
Once baked, let the croutons cool completely on the baking sheet. They will crisp up further as they cool.
Serve over your favorite Caesar salad or tomato soup and enjoy!
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
