How to Cook Crab Legs

In 5 Ways

Crab legs are one of the easiest things to cook at home. Cooking is a straightforward process that can be done in a few simple steps. Each method will bring out a unique flavor profile.

What you'll need:
1-2 pounds crab legs
1/2 cup melted butter (1 stick)
Creole Seasoning or Old Bay
3 large garlic cloves, minced
Lemon juice and wedges
Parsley or chives

If your crab legs are frozen, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water for a quick thawing.

I. How to Bake Crab Legs:

Preheat oven to 375° F. Scrub the legs under cold running water to clean.

Optional: When ready to cook, you can cut the crab legs into half so the flesh of the crab is visible. Skip the knife and use kitchen shears or scissors to do so. Otherwise skip this step.

Place crab legs in an oven-safe pan or on a baking sheet. (They can be slightly stacked.) Set aside.

Add 1 stick melted butter, 3 minced garlic cloves, and 1/2 tsp Creole seasoning in a small bowl. Microwave for about a minute. Remove and add lemon juice from half a lemon and a handful of chopped parsley. Mix well.

Brush crab with butter mixture all over - reserve any excess for serving if there is any; if you need more liquid to cover the bottom of the pan, add in a couple tablespoons of olive oil.

Place the crab legs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes. Cook until the crab legs are heated through.

Serve immediately with the remaining sauce and/or lemon wedges for squeezing over meat. Sprinkle with parsley or chives.

II. How to Boil Crab Legs:

Fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil. Season the water with 1 tablespoon of salt, if desired.⁣

Submerge crab legs into the boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove from water and serve with melted butter, Old Bay or Creole seasoning, and lemon wedges for squeezing over meat.⁣

III. How to Steam Crab Legs⁣:

Fill a large pot with about an inch of water and bring it to a boil. Place a steamer basket or rack in the pot.

Arrange the crab legs in the steamer basket, making sure they are not overcrowded. Put lid on to cover and steam 5 to 7 minutes. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size and thickness of the crab legs.

Once the crab legs are cooked, carefully remove them from the pot using tongs or a slotted spoon. Serve with melted butter, Old Bay seasoning, and lemon wedges for squeezing over meat.⁣

IV. How to Broil Crab Legs⁣:

Preheat your oven on the low broiler setting.

Place crab legs on a baking sheet. Brush legs with melted butter or olive oil, if desired.

Place tray 6 to 8 inches beneath the broiler and broil 3 to 4 minutes per side, flipping halfway through.

Serve hot with melted butter, Old Bay seasoning, and lemon wedges for squeezing over meat.⁣

V. How to Grill Crab Legs:

Brush the legs with oil or butter, place them directly on a preheated grill over medium heat
Grill for 5-7 minutes per side, or until heated through and lightly charred.

Regardless of the cooking method you choose, be careful not to overcook the crab legs, as they can become tough and rubbery. With these simple steps, you can enjoy delicious and succulent crab legs at home with ease. Internal temperature in crab legs should reach 145°F.
